Changing demographics and shifting patterns in global economic growth are driving demand for energy provision. At the same time, significant new hydrocarbon discoveries are becoming rarer and
available proven reserves are in increasingly difficult or remote locations, or in politically sensitive jurisdictions. Access to alternative generation technologies is not universal, and safety concerns over nuclear energy persist. The shifting demand is in many cases aligned to regions where Clyde & Co excels – be it an oil and gas exploration project in Iraq, the construction of a new power station in China, or the acquisition of a mining concession in Tanzania.
With a significant presence in the key energy markets of the Middle East, Africa, the FSU, Asia and North and South America, we are already well aligned to the market. Our team of energy lawyers are based throughout our international network and have experience across every major hydrocarbon producing area in the world.
Coupling our industry expertise with local knowledge, we are ideally placed to advise across the entire energy value chain, including:
- Oil and gas
- Power and utilities
- Natural resources
Many of our partners and their respective teams have worked in-house at major energy companies and understand the challenges faced by our clients on a day to day basis, with extensive knowledge of corporate, finance, projects, dispute resolution, compliance, employment and HSE.
Our experience is wide ranging and has included assisting a government in establishing its national oil company. We have advised a client on its executives’ interviews prior to the UK Parliamentary Committee hearing considering the future of deep water drilling and we have handled many of the world’s largest energy-related casualty cases. Our experience also spans the development of major oil fields including, most recently, the West Qurna-2 oil field in Iraq, one of the world’s largest untapped oilfields.
Across the power sector we advise sponsors, lenders and contractors on all aspects of the financing, construction and operation of major power and water projects. Covering generation, transmission and distribution, our experience includes the Riyadh PP11 IPP and the Khrami II Hydropower station in Georgia.
Our natural resources team focus on mining and mineral projects and acted on the Tonkolili iron ore project in Sierra Leone, the world’s largest magnetite resource.
