Clyde & Co has advised clients on the business opportunities offered by China's evolving markets for over 30 years. Initially covering China from Hong Kong, the opening of our Shanghai office in 2006 significantly reinforced the firm's capabilities and presence in the region. In 2013, we were granted a licence by China's Ministry of Justice to open a second Mainland China office in Beijing.

Our mainland China offices in Beijing and Shanghai have over 25 lawyers and legal staff between them, with extensive experience and knowledge of the complexities of how business is done in China. Our Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong offices operate as an integrated unit with much involvement and interaction between the three offices. We have the critical mass, resources and depth of experience to handle the largest and most complex transactions.

Our lawyers are multi-lingual and admitted in multiple jurisdictions including Hong Kong, China, Singapore, England and Wales, the United States, Ireland, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand.

We advise both multinational corporations on their disputes with Chinese counterparties, and Chinese or Asian clients on their disputes in China, Asia or worldwide.

Named International Insurance Law Firm of the Year by Chambers China Awards in 2013 and 2012, we have the leading insurance law practice in China, which is ranked in the top tier of the main legal directories. Our strengths in the aviation, shipping, construction, energy and international trade sectors ensures that our insurance and reinsurance lawyers have expert knowledge of those sectors, which enhances their commercial understanding of our clients. We also have a team of corporate insurance lawyers based in Shanghai who specialise in corporate, commercial and regulatory insurance matters within China.

Our energy and natural resources lawyers have significant experience of handling projects and transactional work for major energy and resources companies in China and across the region. We are able to advise clients involved in all facets of the industry, including oil and gas, LNG, power and utilities, renewables and natural resources. A core area of practice of our Beijing office focuses on advising Chinese state-owned energy groups on their outbound projects and investments in resource rich geographies around the world where we work closely with our network of offices in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Australia.

Corporate / commercial

Members of our corporate and commercial group assist foreign companies in entering, operating and growing in China and focus on merger and acquisitions, merger controls, corporate finance, private equity and venture capital transactions, joint ventures and shareholders' agreements, reorganisations, refinancings and other general corporate matters.  We also advise Chinese clients on their outbound investments.

Our specialist China employment group has a focus on insurance, aviation, pharmaceuticals, electronics, automotive, financial, property and construction and high end technology companies. We also support our corporate team in providing advice to clients on their business transactions from an employment perspective.

Projects, construction and infrastructure

Our Asia construction group is led out of Hong Kong, and covers infrastructure and construction projects across the region. The team acts for a broad cross-section of the industry from developers, purchasers, landowners and public bodies through to contractors, sub-contractors, engineers, surveyors and investors in relation to both contentious and non-contentious construction matters.

We are ranked top-tier for shipping in the major legal directories. Our China marine group is highly experienced in resolving issues arising from marine and energy insurance, shipping and transport and international trade and commodities. Our broad client base includes property and liability insurers, ship owners, charterers, traders, commodity brokers, banks, logistics companies and transport groups, major energy and offshore construction operators, oil majors and operators.  We have acted in many marine casualties and our experience extends to every area of shipping: salvage and collision, charterparties, ship finance, cargo, ship sale and purchase, procurement, and all insurance matters associated with shipping. We also advise on all aspects of international trade including commodities, trade finance, bills of lading, ship sale and purchase and logistics.

Our aviation group advises the entire spectrum of industry participants and offers a full range of aviation finance and aviation liability capabilities.
