Andrew Tobin

Solicitor, London

Andrew is a solicitor in the Insurance and Reinsurance Group although he also has clients and interests often involving other practice areas of the firm.

Andrew joined Clyde & Co in 2003 and specialises in insurance and reinsurance matters - from coverage advice to litigation and arbitration where necessary. Typically his caseload includes large property, engineering, power, product and professional liability losses as well as many 'pure' reinsurance issues such as aggregation, claims control and follow the settlements issues. He also advises on regulatory issues in the UK and overseas.

Andrew is co-author of a leading textbook on the insurance of  'War Risks and Terrorism' available from The Insurance Institute of London

He originally trained and practised as a barrister, qualifying in 2000 before joining a US firm specialising in insurance and reinsurance coverage and subrogation, working in particular on the film-finance litigation. Andrew also qualified as a solicitor in 2002, and was admitted as a solicitor-advocate with full rights of audience in all courts in England and Wales.

He has a particular interest in Russia and the other countries of the former Soviet Union and assists Russian businesses with a very wide variety of legal issues around the globe as well as businesses wishing to invest in Russia. Such issues have recently included shipping, insurance, property transactions, debt financing, share purchases and commercial litigation.

Before studying law Andrew took a BA (Hons) in Russian and East European History at London University's School of Slavonic and East European Studies; he then took an MA in Modern History at University College London before spending a year at Saint Petersburg State University in Russia studying Russian language and culture.
