Bruce joined Clyde & Co in 2008 as master mariner in the Singapore office.
During a 27-year seagoing career, during which he obtained a British Master’s Class 1 certificate, Bruce gained experience on general cargo vessels, OBOs, product tankers, panamax and very large Ore/Oil vessels and large crude oil tankers. He served for 15 years as master of VLCCs and ULCCs, including periods of lightering, dry-docking, retro-fitting and laying up before being invited ashore in 1994.
On coming ashore, he worked first as Port Captain in Hong Kong for the same major shipping company that he had been sailing with, during which time he achieved ISM certification for the Hong Kong fleet. Thereafter, he set up the Safety & Quality Department in Singapore for the same company and successfully achieved ISM certification for the combined fleets by 1996. After this, Bruce became Senior Vice President of the company with responsibility for fleet operations.
In 1999, he became a consultant with a well-known firm in Singapore and has been involved with many shipping casualty investigations in numerous countries bordering the Indian and Pacific oceans. He has also assisted several shipping companies with improvements to their safety documentation and processes. He uses advanced computer motion graphics to help clarify casualty situations for non-seafarers.
Bruce is a member of the Nautical Institute, the Institute of Petroleum and the Singapore Institute of Arbitration.
