Douglas Maag joined Clyde & Co in March 2009. He brings to the firm a wealth of insurance and reinsurance experience, having served in a variety of industry capacities over a twenty-four year legal career.
Douglas was previously head in-house counsel for the international division of a major global insurer, advising clients on a broad array of corporate, regulatory, compliance and other business issues, and managing high-impact litigations. He also counselled international clients on numerous transactional matters, including complex acquisitions, divestitures and the establishment of new insurance operations, and provided legal support and analysis for emerging market opportunities. Specific to reinsurance, Douglas has handled scores of disputed matters in the U.S., London and Bermuda markets -- with emphasis on captive, insolvency and run-off matters -- and has experience drafting virtually all related business agreements and documents. His insurance and reinsurance experience extends across Asia, Australia, Latin America and Europe, in addition to the United States and Bermuda.
Douglas also was outside counsel with other major firms in New York City, with involvement in a variety of reinsurance, insurance and commercial disputes, as well as insurance regulatory matters.
Douglas is an ARIAS•US certified arbitrator, and he has served as arbitrator and umpire on numerous reinsurance, insurance and commercial disputes.
Douglas graduated cum laude from Whittier College School of Law, where he was Editor-In-Chief of the Whittier Law Review.
