Recent experience

  • Represented Gasprom in operations issues, Shtockman Gas Project Barents Sea.
  • Worked in London and Dubai on the equity and debt (project) financing of Russian and Central Asian oil and gas and mining projects.
  • Represented a US group in copper, gold, phosphate and granite mining projects in the Peoples Republic of China including the acquisition of interests in these projects from the Chinese national and local government entities and private parties and liaising with local counsel in Beijing on Chinese local law issues.
  • Seconded to legal department of Kazmunaigas, Astana, Kazakhstan, January – June 2003, with responsibility for upstream oil and gas projects in Caspian Sea as well as onshore Kazakhstan.
  • Leader of legal team representing Ministry of Oil & Gas of Turkmenistan and Turkmenistan state oil company in ICC arbitration against Bridas, a private owned oil company based in Argentina
  • Representation of a joint venture between a Canadian mining company (Cameco Inc.) and the Kyrgyzstan State mining concern (Kyrgyzaltyn) regarding development of Kumtor gold deposit in Republic of Kyrgyzstan (second largest undeveloped gold deposit in the world) including securing financing of US$315 million from various multilateral and private financial institutions, and negotiation and drafting of foreign investment contract with the Government of Kyrgyzstan.
  • Representation of venture capital group in purchase of interest in major oil field in Kazakhstan and acquisition of controlling interest in Toronto Stock Exchange-listed Canadian natural resources company.
  • Representation of Privatization Agency of Government of Azerbaijan in privatization of large scale enterprises in Azerbaijan.
  • Representing a major U.S. electric power generation and distribution company in privatization of electric power generation and distribution system in East Kazakhstan including managing a team of lawyers onsite in Ust Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan.
  • In charge of representation of major French oil company in shipping and oil trading activities in the United States including with respect to Mega Borg disaster in Gulf of Mexico in 1990.
