James Varanese

James is a partner advising clients on energy, project finance, cross-border acquisitions, and joint ventures. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School.

James specialises in negotiated acquisitions, private equity deals, and joint ventures in emerging markets.

His energy practice includes oil exploration & production, and the associated infrastructure. James has negotiated and documented numerous upstream PSAs and concessions, and the related JOAs for oil and gas E&P projects in Russia and Central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa.

His project practice encompasses multi-modal transportation, LNG, pipelines, processing plants, mini-refineries, environmental treatment and management, offshore terminals, and other midstream and downstream assets. He also advises on power and power transmission and distribution projects.

His finance expertise includes a broad range of cross-border finance transactions including project finance, syndicated lending, commodities pre-export finance, and acquisition (leveraged) finance.

James is a member of the Legal Advisory Task Force of the Energy Charter Secretariat for transnational pipeline projects. James speaks English and Russian. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and the Bar of the State of Ohio, and a foreign registered lawyer with the Law Society of England and Wales.
