Richard joined Clyde & Co in July 2007. He initially worked for Clyde & Co in Dubai before moving to Abu Dhabi to head up the firm's commercial dispute resolution team in the capital. Richard has a wide ranging commercial litigation practice advising clients on contentious matters across a number of jurisdictions in the Middle East, North Africa and the Sub Continent. He has particular experience in property development disputes and has acted for a number of the UAE's leading developers and master developers. He also has significant experience in the automotive sector and has acted for many well known automotive manufacturers advising on the termination of import agreements and dealer contracts and various liability issues arising under local law. In addition, Richard regularly advises oil and gas companies, defence contractors and professional service companies on contentious matters arising out of joint venture contracts and commercial agency agreements.
A trial lawyer by training, Richard regularly appears for clients as a party advocate in arbitration proceedings before ADCCAC, DIAC and the LCIA. He also advises clients on issues arising under local law and is frequently instructed to provide advice on litigation strategy in respect of proceedings before the UAE Courts.
Richard has written many published articles on arbitration and litigation in the UAE and is a regular speaker on his areas of practice at conferences and seminars both locally and internationally.
Richard qualified as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand where he practiced for 12 years as a commercial litigation lawyer, primarily in the insurance, construction and property sectors. He remains a member of the New Zealand bar.
