Victor Rae-Reeves

Partner, London

Victor deals with a wide range of major disputes both in the UK and internationally.  He is quoted as being the "market leader for complex litigation" (Legal 500).  Such disputes typically fall within the areas of construction and engineering, including particular sector focus on rail and nuclear.  Disputes range from domestic adjudications, cross-border litigation and include significant arbitrations.  One recent example was successfully defending subcontractors against attempts to reopen aspects of Murphy v Brentwood  in the Linklaters' litigation (see citation).

Victor is well known in the London insurance and reinsurance market, where he is often instructed to coordinate and provide strategy following major catastrophic losses in the UK and abroad.  Such work includes regularly pursuing declaratory actions on policy points, particularly in relation to liability policies.

Victor has acted for train operating companies and their insurers since privatisation in 1994.  He has dealt with many of the landmark rail industry disasters since then, including the Bexley derailment (1997), the Ladbroke Grove/Paddington disaster (1999) and the Hatfield derailment (2000).  He is currently dealing with many similar events, both in the UK and abroad including the Czech train crash in 2008 and the derailment in Angouleme, France in 2009 as well as less significant incidents.  Over the same period he has defended all manner of Health, Safety and Environmental prosecutions both on the railways and for major construction companies.

Victor also has significant experience of the nuclear sector and was appointed in 2010 to advise the insurance and nuclear industry on the handling of large losses and catastrophes.  This involves liaison with a wide range of parties with interests in the nuclear industry, including the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and involves developing knowledge of the UK Nuclear Estate and participating in exercises.

Recent international work includes major incidents in the US and France (including the collapse of the Madonna stage in Marseille in 2009).  Further afield he has recently dealt with work in the Middle East, Latin America and Eastern Europe.  Victor has lectured at university for over 10 years, specifically on the Masters of International Law degree course at both the University of Barcelona and the University of Madrid.  He also lectures widely on policy cover and health and safety matters to the industry and fellow professionals.

Victor is Chairman of the UK Insurance Executive
