Bill Hapiuk practices in the area of commercial litigation, with particular emphasis on insurance-related matters and complex, multi-party commercial disputes, including actions involving international transactions and litigation across international lines. He regularly counsels and advises clients on a wide range of insurance issues arising out of first- and third-party policies and handles coverage and other complex litigation matters in federal and state courts, as well as ADR forums, across the United States. Bill has substantial courtroom experience, having argued numerous pre-trial motions, including successful summary judgment and other dispositive motions, and first-chaired a federal jury trial. He has written articles on insurance coverage for client-oriented publications as well as contributed to practice guides and manuals for other attorneys.
Bill has an active pro bono practice and volunteers with bar and community service organizations. He recently received the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Housing Justice Award and was named an Outstanding Volunteer in Public Service by the Volunteer Legal Services Program. His work on high-profile pro bono matters has been recognized in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and American Lawyer.
Bill is a 2000 graduate of Stanford Law School, where he was elected Senior Articles Editor of Stanford Law Review. He served as a law clerk to the Hon. John T. Noonan, Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and as a judicial extern to the Hon. William Alsup of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Bill holds an undergraduate degree in history and political economy from Tulane University, where was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and a graduate degree in history from Johns Hopkins University. He also completed the General Course at the London School of Economics.
