Zafar was called to the English Bar by Middle Temple. His additional qualifications include an MBA, he is a Member of the Punjab Bar Council as advocate of Pakistan's High Court, a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators as well as the International Bar Association. Zafar was educated at Birmingham, Nottingham and Durham Universities in England. He also completed his Bar training at Oxford University.
Prior to joining Clyde & Co as Regional Legal Director, Zafar was Legal Counsel for five years at Fauji Foundation Group, one of the largest commercial organisations in Pakistan. Duties included: legal opinions, revising different agreements, drafting agreements and handling local and international disputes.
