Energy, trade and commodities

At Clyde & Co we have an understanding of our clients and the markets they work in, that is both strategic and operational. We know the risks and opportunities arising at every stage from conception to drawdown, from production to consumption.

Our “multi-disciplined team” consists of industry specialists who involve themselves in all aspects of the sector, both contentious and non-contentious, transactional and advisory. Clients come to us because they know all our lawyers have that insider knowledge that enables them to focus on what is worth fighting for and the goal that the client is seeking to achieve.

On the commodities side our practice covers hard, soft and liquid commodities; futures and derivatives; oil, LNG, gas, power and bio-fuels and the newer specialisations such as carbon trading.

But we don’t just advise on the goods being traded. Our international trade team advises throughout the supply chain; insuring, transporting, storing, resolving disputes and financing. Our trade and commodities finance practice is experienced in all possible financing options as well as debt recoveries. We understand how to make the money in international trade work for clients. In an increasingly regulated sector, we have the EC and regulatory specialists to advise on compliance and to assist with risk strategies.

With resource nationalism an ever present problem, we also have the expertise in the relevant bilateral treaties, political risk and appropriation sectors and our WTO team regularly advises on the GATT trade agreement, technical barriers to trade and WTO dispute settlement.
