"IRAN DEYANAT" - August 2008
We have received instructions to represent the owners/underwriters of cargo laden on board the IRAN DEYANAT. The vessel was on a voyage from China to Europe when she was seized by Somalian pirates in late August 2008. The vessel's owners have declared General Average and Richards Hogg Lindley have been appointed to collect General Average security.
We are instructed in the defence of the shipowner's claim for General Average. We are presently reviewing the proposed wording of the GA documentation with a view to ensuring our clients' interests are properly protected.

"GRAND DUBAI" - July 2008
The "GRAND DUBAI" grounded on the Western Scheldt at Ossenrisse whilst departing Antwerp in ballast.
Salvage services under the terms of a Lloyd's Open Form of Salvage Agreement were agreed with Multraship and URS and the vessel was successfully refloated and towed to Flushing.

"NORFOLK EXPRESS" - May 2008
The "NORFOLK EXPRESS" is a 1995 built container vessel, 45,240dwt grounded south of Ras Shukheir on 30 May 2008. The vessel operates on a liner service between the Ports of Le Havre, Rotterdam, Tilbury, Hamburg, Antwerp, Gibraltar, Gioia Tauro, Port Mohammed Bin Qasim and Jebel Ali and she was carrying cargo destined for the Gulf, Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.
The vessel has been successfully refloated under a commercial contract and there is therefore is no requirement on the cargo/container interests to provide salvage security. After backloading her bunkers the vessel will proceed to Jebel Ali, where she is expected to arrive on 26/27th June 2008.
The shipowners have incurred substantial expenses as a consequence of the grounding and have declared General Average. Contributions are presently expected in the region of 10% of destination values. It will therefore be necessary for cargo and container interests to provide General Average security prior to taking delivery of their property.

"MERIWA" - May 2008
Fully cellular containership "MERIWA" of 5,006 grt, sustained crankshaft damage near the port of Bilbao on May 26, and had to be towed/assisted into Bilbao by two tugs. As a consequence of the breakdown the shipowners have declared General Average and are collecting General Average security from cargo interests. No doubt the shipowners GA expenses will include the cost of the salvage service.

"HANSA CENTURION" - May 2008
The "HANSA CENTURION", a 1998 built Containership 16,915 grt and 21,492 dwt grounded whilst inbound to Antwerp on 30th May 2008. The vessel operates on a liner service between the West African ports of Conakry, Abidjan, Cotonou, Apapa-Lagos and San Pedro and prior to the casualty occurring, after departing West Africa, she had called at Amsterdam and Hamburg and was heading for Antwerp, Felixstowe and Le Havre.
The LOF salvage claim, in respect of the refloating and towage services provided by Multraship to the "HANSA CENTURION", has been settled by way of amicable agreement between the salvors and the shipowners. Thus there is no requirement on the cargo/container interests to provide salvage security.
However, the shipowners have declared General Average and are collecting General Average security from cargo interests. No doubt the shipowners GA expenses will include the cost of the salvage service.

"MSC LUGANO" - March 2008
In March 2008 the full cellular containership "MSC LUGANO" suffered a fire in her engine room whilst on a Westbound voyage from Melbourne, Adelaide, Fremantle to Djakarta, Singapore, Colombo, Jeddah, La Spezia, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Felixstowe. The owners of the vessel contracted with Svitzer Salvage to render towage assistance on a commercial basis and the vessel was brought into Fremantle on 13th April 2008. The shipowners have declared General Average and all cargo/containers will be required to provide General Average security before it will be released.
Clyde & Co have been instructed to represent a proportion of the cargo on board the "MSC LUGANO" to investigate the cause of the casualty and advise in relation to the defence of the shipowner's General Average claim.

"CMA CGM DON CARLOS" - January 2008
On 18th January 2008 the 2006 built gearless container vessel "CMA CGM DON CARLOS" grounded in the Bitter Lakes, in the Gulf of Suez. Services to refloat the vessel were undertaken on a commercial contract. The vessel's owners have declared General Average and all cargo/containers interests are required to provide General Average security before they will be released.

"VOYAGER" - January 2008
On 13th January 2008, the "VOYAGER", a bulk carrier of 33,347 dwt received salvage services from Les Abeilles International under Lloyd's Form. The vessel had suffered a blackout some days before and was drifting in adverse weather conditions off the French Brittany Coast. The vessel was laden with 24,000 tonnes of steel. The salvage services terminated on 15th January at Brest.

"ANJA" - November 2007
On 8th November 2007 the "ANJA", a general cargo ship of 41,454 gt loaded with containers grounded, whilst on a voyage from Salten to Mo i Rana. Salvage services were rendered by Taubatkompaniet AS Boa Offshore A.S. under the terms of a Lloyd's Open Form of Salvage Agreement and the vessel was successfully refloated and taken to Moi Rana where she has discharged her full cargo. The vessel has since departed for repairs in Poland but the cargo remains pending the provision of security in respect of both salvage and General Average.

"MOL DISCOVERY" - November 2007
On 13th November 2007 the fully cellular containership "MOL DISCOVERY" (42,812 gt) grounded in the Gulf of Suez whilst on a voyage from Europe to Singapore, Yantian and Shanghai. The owners of the vessel contracted with Nippon Salvage and Smit Salvage BV as joint salvors on LOF terms. Salvage services include the removal of bunkers and lightening of cargo to facilitate the refloating operation. The shipowners have declared General Average and all cargo will be required to provide both salvage and General Average security before it will be released.

"SCF VALDAI" - November 2007
On 4th November 2007 the "SCF VALDAI", a laden tanker of 159,000 dwt, suffered an engine breakdown during the course of a voyage to Fos. She was carrying some 130,000 tons of crude oil. Salvage services were rendered to the vessel under an LOF contract by Tsavliris and Loucas G Matsas, and the vessel was towed into Pireaus by the "MATSAS STAR".

On 1 September 2007 fully cellular containership "ENDEAVOUR" suffered an engine failure whilst on a voyage from Manaus to Guadeloupe. "BOW STAR" - September 2007
On 13 September 2007 the chemical tanker "BOW STAR" grounded whilst leaving the port of Pulau Batam (Indonesia) laden with cargo loaded at Japan, Korea, Taiwan and South East Asia. The cargo was destined to be discharged at North West European ports.
As a consequence of the grounding the vessel sustained significant damage to her starboard side bottom plating and a number of compartments have been breached. It is not known to what extent if any the cargo has been damaged.
The shipowners have declared General Average and are requiring all cargo interests to provide general average security.
A Lloyd's Form salvage contract has been agreed with Smit and it is intended to lighten the vessel to assist refloating. Thereafter the casualty will need to be repaired and it is probable the cargo will be transhipped to destination.

Carrying a cargo of urea ammonium nitrate (liquid) from Romania to Australia, this vessel got into difficulty in the Gulf of Aden. Initial reports stated the engine room was flooded due to a pump problem. The vessel subsequently sank some 95 miles from Socotra. All 19 crew members were rescued. Clyde & Co are advising the insurers of the cargo.

Whilst on a voyage from Fredericia to Rotterdam, laden with a cargo of crude oil, the oil tanker "MINERVA CONCERT" grounded on a shoal in the vicinity of Hatter Barn near the island of Samsoe, Denmark on the evening of Monday 14 May. There was no pollution and the vessel was subsequently refloated by professional Salvors operating under a Lloyd's Open Form of Salvage following a lightening operation. On 11th March 2007, the general cargo vessel "ARKLOW SEA" became immobilised as a result of the rudder and propeller being fouled by a fishing net when the vessel was in a position to the North of the French Brittany Coast. "GOLDEN SKY" - January 2007
On 15 January, whilst carrying a cargo of about 24,500 tons of potash, this vessel stranded on the Latvian coast some 4 miles from the port of Ventspils. 16 of the vessel's crew were evacuated by helicopters and after very difficult salvage operations hindered by the presence of ice, the vessel was finally refloated on 16 March 2007. MSC NAPOLI - January 2007
The container vessel MSC NAPOLI suffered structural damage whilst on a voyage from Northwest Europe to South Africa laden with approximately 2,600 containers. Salvage services are being rendered under a Lloyd's Open Form (with SCOPIC invoked) and the casualty has been beached to prevent it from sinking. A number of containers have fallen overboard and the salvors are taking steps to prevent a major pollution incident involving the hazardous cargo that is on board as well as the vessel's bunkers. This casualty (64,054 gt, 68,863 dwt, 1996 built container vessel) caught fire following a serious explosion on 21 March about 120 miles east of Aden and 60 miles off the coast. Some containers have been lost overboard and many destroyed. The vessel is on a voyage from Busan, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Singapore to Rotterdam, Hamburg, Thamesport and Le Havre. AMT EXPLORER - January 2006
The casualty is a deck cargo barge of 13,800dwt, 91.7 metres in length. The barge with cargo on board was being towed by a tug from West Africa to the Netherlands when the tow line parted in adverse weather conditions off the French Brittany Coast. We represent French professional salvors whose new station keeping salvage tug 'ABEILLE BOURBON' assisted under a LOF 2000 contract. A salvage team from the tug was transferred to the barge by helicopter and a towage connection was successfully established with the 'ABEILLE BOURBON'. The barge was then towed to Roscoff where the salvage services terminated.
