James is an Associate in the Melbourne office and brings specialised experience supporting in relation to digital transformation programs, privacy, cyber risk, emerging technologies (e.g. automation, machine learning and blockchain) and the regulation of digital business models.

Digital technology is transforming how businesses, individuals and governments relate and interact and, with more and more data being collected, stored and shared there are exciting new opportunities but also new regulatory, security and ethical complexities. James helps clients in the public and private sectors to navigate these opportunities and the associated risks.

James has presented on a range of topics from technology governance to AI ethics at the World Economic Forum, Melbourne and Monash Universities and at various other conferences, summits and panel events. He has co-authored articles, guides and commentary in Thomson Reuters Practical Law, the LexisNexis Privacy Law Bulletin, Financier Worldwide and the Data Protection Leader. In 2020, James was recognised as being among the profession’s ‘rising stars’ at the Australian Law Awards.

  • Mapping of Australian and regional privacy regimes and key Cloud Codes of Conduct against ISO/IEC 27701 for a major global tech company
  • Supporting one of Australia's 'big four' banks with data retention/deletion and the information aspects of their divestment of a key business

  • Advice on data governance issues for the sharing and use of sensitive information for an AI product in the healthcare sector
  • Developing a Data Governance Framework for a major Australia health services provider
  • Preparing privacy documentation for one of Australia's commercial television networks
  • Supporting a comprehensive privacy management uplift for one of Australia's largest member-owned financial institutions
