Sydney, 16 July 2025: Steven Lurie further strengthens the firm’s insurance professional indemnity offering in Australia, following hires of three Special Counsel
Global law firm Clyde & Co today announces the promotion to partner of Steven Lurie in Sydney. The appointment enables the firm to further strengthen its insurance indemnity and liability offering, particularly in financial lines and the construction and engineering sectors, and follows the hires of three Special Counsel in the same team.
In-depth Defence and Coverage expertise
Steven has over 25 years' experience working in professional indemnity, construction, liability insurance and financial lines. He has acted for multinational insurers, as both defence and coverage counsel, and in recovery proceedings, including international arbitration proceedings.
Steven has represented insurers of financial institutions in claims arising from margin calls made during the Global Financial Crisis; acted for D&O insurers of a reinsurance company in a long running coverage dispute; for D&O insurers of construction, engineering and mining companies in class actions; for major engineering firms themselves across the gamut of engineering disciplines, including in the defence of long-running professional negligence claims arising out of the Gateway Upgrade Project (at the time Australia’s largest infrastructure project); and for more than ten years in defence of professional negligence claims against solicitors and barristers.
Matthew Smith, Partner, Insurance, said: “Steven’s promotion to partner is fantastic and will help with our focus on further growing our offering in the professional risks space, particularly in relation to engineering and construction claims.”
Rebecca Kelly, Australia Managing Partner, Brisbane, said: “Steven’s appointment underlines our growing, strong presence in our core sector of Insurance, and reinforces the career pathways available as part of our Australian practice.”
Steven Lurie said: “Clyde & Co is the world’s leading insurance law firm. For a professional indemnity lawyer like me, this represents the pinnacle of legal practice, and I am excited to be able to continue servicing clients, both locally and internationally, and offering them the breadth of knowledge and expertise that only a truly global and integrated firm like Clyde & Co can.”
Growing Indemnity and Liability offering
The appointment further strengthens Clyde & Co’s offering in Insurance liability and indemnity and comes following the hire in that practice of Hugo Thomas and Kyle Bowles in May 2025, and William Madani in June 2025, who all joined as Special Counsel. All are based in Sydney.
Clyde & Co’s global Insurance practice of 2,400 lawyers in nearly 70 offices around the world handles matters across all lines of insurance business, helping the insurance market navigate risk.
