UK Immigration Update – August 2026

Our latest bulletin explains the upcoming introduction of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for all Level 1 Users of the Sponsorship Management System (SMS).

What is the MFA?

Common to many platforms, the aim behind its introduction is to create an additional layer of security for Level 1 Users accessing the SMS, beyond the provision of their User ID and password.

How will it operate?

Once the User ID and Password have been inserted, Level 1 Users will receive a verification code via the mobile number or email address registered on the SMS. Level 1 Users will generally be asked to confirm their date of birth when accessing an MFA-enabled account for the first time and when changing their mobile phone number or email address.

When will it come into force?

The changes will begin to be phased in from 3 September 2026, with full rollout expected by November 2026.

What steps should Level 1 Users be taking in advance?

• Log in to your SMS account to ensure that your date of birth, mobile number and email address are recorded correctly
• Familiarise yourself with the MFA User Guide provided by the Home Office with your MFA implementation notification. In the event of any queries, there is a specially designated resource for Level 1 and 2 Users contactable at MFACOC@homeoffice.gov.uk, quoting the full name of the Organization, Sponsor Licence Number and full name of the relevant Level 1 or 2 User
• Consider adding additional Level 1 Users to cover potential scenarios where an existing Level 1 user, due to technical issues or otherwise, cannot receive MFA codes to their devices.

Will the changes impact other Key Personnel on the SMS?

Yes. Level 2 Users, who have more restricted SMS access, should take the same preparatory steps outlined above. However, due to the functionality of the new system, Level 1 Users will be unable to add new Level 2 Users, although they will continue to be able to appoint additional Level 1 Users. The changes will not affect the duties of Authorising Officers and Key Contacts who are not also Level 1 or Level 2 Users.
