Courtney completed her articles of clerkship with Clyde & Co and is presently a junior associate in the Johannesburg office with primary experience in insurance and reinsurance litigation, coverage advice and defence as well as aviation advice and disputes. She has previous experience in Clyde & Co’s international construction and projects team where she assisted the MEA and UK offices in complex construction disputes.
Legal drafting, litigation strategy, and advising on coverage and liability are a few of the ways Courtney adds value to matters. She also has intricate knowledge of the day-to-day workings of the South African courts as well as experience in domestic and international arbitration.
Courtney has experience in a range of complex, high-value and novel insurance and reinsurance claims including those relating to the Covid-19 pandemic, product liability, professional indemnity, assets, aviation, construction, financial lines and D&O policies.
Her aviation experience includes complex domestic and international disputes and advisory work relating to cargo, personal injury and property damage disputes.
In her spare time, she assist her fellow members of the Y-AFSA inaugural committee in developing Y-AFSA, the youth division of the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa.
Experience
- Reinsurance – successfully brought a claim against a reinsurer for ZAR650,000.00 based on a dispute on the interpretation of a reinsurance treaty
- Insurance arbitration – preparing the defence relating to a claim of AED 12,590,349.2 to be heard before the Dubai International Arbitration Centre
- Aviation disputes – successfully represented our client in a criminal inquest relating to an aviation casualty
- Insurance disputes – successfully defended a claim of ZAR500,000.00 in the High Court regarding a public liability claim
- Insurance litigation – received numerous favourable awards in the High Court in response to various interlocutory applications
