Melanie is an associate in the International Arbitration Group in our London office.  She has a broad practice in investor-state and commercial arbitration.  Her work focuses on public international law, general commercial disputes, energy (natural gas, hydropower and solar), mining and commodities, and insurance in Latin America, Europe and Africa. She has practical experience in claims under the major institutional rules, including ICC, UNCITRAL and ICSID.

Melanie has an interest in the law and policy of climate change and has volunteered as a junior facilitator for The Chancery Lane Project.

Melanie was admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales in September 2019 having completed her training contract at the firm. She read French and Spanish at Magdalen College, Oxford, graduating with a first-class degree in 2015. She advises in English, French and Spanish.

Experience
  • International Arbitration - Representing two Central American investors against one of Latin America's largest countries in a USD 400+ million claim under a bilateral investment treaty (bilateral investment treaty/UNCITRAL Rules)
  • International Arbitration – Representing an investor in a multi-million dollar treaty claim against a Latin American state (bilateral investment treaty/ICSID)
  • International Arbitration – Representing two insurers in an ICC arbitration claim relating to the destruction of a gas turbine in Peru.  
  • International Arbitration – Representing an insurer in an ICC arbitration claim relating to the destruction of a power plant in Ecuador.
  • International Arbitration – Representing a Brazilian steel company in an ICC arbitration claim against a manufacturer relating to defective plant equipment.
  • International Arbitration – Defending a southern African parastatal mining company in claims brought against it by a mine operator in an UNCITRAL arbitration and related proceedings in the South African courts.
  • International Arbitration – Successfully defending a UK-based mining company in ICSID annulment proceedings brought by the Republic of The Gambia (ICSID Case No. ARB/09/19)
