Report: Closing the protection gap through inclusive insurance

24 September 2018 Global

1. Introduction

In this report we look broadly at the challenge of providing insurance cover to those in developing and emerging markets who are under or uninsured against a range of both extreme and everyday misfortunes.

Our paper earlier this year looked at the part parametric insurance plays in building resilience.

However, natural disasters are only one of many risks that people face and parametric insurance can only ever be one part of the insurance mix.

In this second report we have gone beyond weather related events to explore every-day catastrophes that affect low income individuals in emerging markets. It looks at how technological advances are enabling insurers to drive incremental costs down to make insurance affordable and inclusive, with support from governments who recognise the significance for their people.
