The Looking Glass Report

Clyde & Co is pleased to have collaborated with Winmark to produce this year’s edition of the Looking Glass report.

Winmark is a professional member network that enables C-suite Executives to learn from their peers and engage in discussions that are transforming their business environment.

The annual Looking Glass report investigates trends and developments that impact senior legal leaders, both in-house and in private practice.

We would like to thank the 120 senior business representatives (both General Counsel and Board directors) who have taken the time to share their insights with us.

2020 report: Navigate

This year's report research carried out Jan - March captures opinions just as COVID19 was emerging, giving us one last glimpse of the 'pre-COVID' concerns of business. It also tracks their thinking as it progressed, providing us with some useful clues as to what the pandemic has done to shift opinions.

We have seen how COVID-19 has accelerated changes; some possibly reversed and how new dimensions of risk have been introduced. Also how legal departments have supported their organisations through this time and become an even more essential part of the strategic and resource management of organisations. Key findings include:

  1. Risk landscape: COVID-19 has fundamentally changed what was already an increasingly complex, global and fast-moving risk landscape.
  2. Growth: Asia-Pacific (high demand despite political concerns) is the key growth market, but COVID-19 could stymie interest in the region.
  3. Technology & innovation: Businesses are ramping up technological response to COVID-19 but risks persist.
  4. Role of the GC: Boards & GCs aligning in view of risks and roles; concern over operational strategies emerging.
