John began his career at Clyde & Co in London before moving to Sydney in 1998. From 2009, he was the national leader of the insurance and reinsurance practice at a major Asia Pacific law firm.
He has noted experience in all areas of insurance law but particularly the professional indemnity, financial institutions, directors and officers', and general liability fields, both as coverage and defence adviser. He also advises on cyber risks, claims, policies and product launches as well as Privacy Act breaches, having advised a number of global insurers on local law considerations.
He has extensive experience before the supreme courts of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania; the Federal Court of Australia; the courts of England and Wales; and arbitration panels in London, Singapore and Sydney.
He also acted in a number of royal commissions and commissions of inquiry in the region including the Queensland Flood Commission, the Pike River Mine Royal Commission and the HIH Royal Commission.
He is named as one of the Euromoney world’s leading insurance and reinsurance lawyers, a leading insurance lawyer (Band 1) in Australia in Chambers Asia Pacific 2016 and a recommended insurance lawyer in Australia in Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2016. John has also been recognised by his peers in Best Lawyers 2018 for his leading work in insurance law.
