Ranald qualified in 1997 and was made a partner in 2002. He became a solicitor advocate in 2004. Ranald has specialised in litigation including for insurers, in particular two or three major insurance clients of the firm. He acts in claims of the highest value including employers' liability, road traffic and public liability claims.
His particular area of interest and specialism has always been in relation to the public sector, having advised local authorities and other public bodies in relation to all types of litigation. He is instructed for public sector bodies both through insurers and direct. As well as reparation, Ranald advises and acts for public sector bodies in relation to judicial review and administrative law, procurement and general commercial matters. In particular he has experience in relation to the police and fire service in Scotland.
As a solicitor advocate Ranald appears regularly in the Supreme Courts in Scotland, at both first instance and appeal. He believes that advocacy is a distinct and essential skill that can be learned and improved by anyone. He lead the Advocacy Unit in Scotland and, along with our other solicitor advocates, he is responsible for training all of our solicitors in advocacy skills. This training has also been offered to clients.
Ranald is a contributing editor to Greens Reparation Law Bulletin and is currently writing a textbook on local authority liability in Scotland. In addition, he has been recognised by the Legal 500, 2016 as a recommended lawyer.
