Joel Burren is an Associate in our Perth office who specialises in commercial litigation and dispute resolution. Joel acts for internationally and ASX listed companies, private international and Australian businesses, and local and London-based insurers and underwriters.
Joel has a broad range of experience including acting for clients in complex financial and contractual disputes, regulatory investigations, general commercial disputes and litigation, professional negligence claims, and workplace prosecutions. Joel practises across a broad range of Australian courts and has been involved in litigation in the Magistrates, District and Supreme Courts of Western Australia, Supreme Court of Queensland, Federal Court of Australia, and Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia and the High Court of Fiji.
Joel is passionate about his work and enjoys navigating complex commercial problems and client priorities, particularly in disputes and investigations arising out of the energy, natural resources, construction, M&A, healthcare, and professional services sectors.

- Acting for an internationally listed oil and gas services company on disputes arising from its divestiture of an Australian subsidiary.
- Acting for an internationally listed design and consultancy firm in Federal Court proceedings to enforce a ~$20m arbitration award against a foreign state.
- Acting for a public engineering consultancy firm in defending civil claims following the collapse of a partially constructed building.
- Acting for a former corporate trustee in response to allegations of breach of contract and breach of trustee duties by the new trustee.

- Defending an accused in one of Western Australia’s largest Worksafe prosecutions.
- Representing an Australian university in judicial review proceedings concerning the expulsion of a student.
