Rory is a senior associate within the Insurance Financial & Professional Disputes team in our Dublin office, with significant experience gained practising in Ireland and the UK on a range of insurance coverage, regulatory, professional negligence and financial lines matters. Rory is also qualified to practise in Northern Ireland and has extensive experience of the procedures and practises in that jurisdiction.
He has particular coverage and defence expertise upon insurance and reinsurance matters in respect of property damage and business interruption, professional indemnity, renewable energy and environmental claims and coverage disputes.
Rory has regularly represented London market, Irish and international insurers (and their insureds) in the Courts of all three jurisdictions mentioned above, in addition to acting in disputes resolved by arbitration and mediation.
His recent focus has been upon Covid-19 related policy coverage and regulatory disputes, in addition to acting on behalf of insurers in respect of coverage disputes and claims arising from aircraft leases which have been compromised as a result of the war in Ukraine.
Experience
- Acting for insurers on Covid-19-related business interruption policy coverage disputes, in addition to representing insurers before the Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman in respect of regulatory issues and claims
- Professional indemnity coverage and defence issues, including in respect of defects arising in major Irish apartment development projects
- Advising on multi-billion euro Irish law aircraft lessor hull/war political risks coverage and defence in the context of the February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine
- Undertaking subrogated recovery actions involving negligence and breach of contract in construction disputes, financial lines and a broad spectrum of other sectors
- Product liability coverage and defence representation across a range of sectors
- Advising on coverage and defence issues arising in arbitrations of energy-related property and BI coverage disputes in the Irish windfarm sector
- Advising on first party and third party property damage, employers liability and public liability, insurance coverage and defence issues
- Providing regulatory advice to insurer clients in respect of their engagement with the insurance regulator and ombudsman, including the appeal of ombudsman decisions to the High Court
