Alon has over a decade of experience in dispute resolution and has substantial experience in the construction and engineering sectors, including both back end and front end experience. He has advised numerous large international and domestic (South African) clients, including contractors, employers, engineers and insurers on various aspects construction projects and disputes.

Alon's experience includes arbitrating (and litigating) on the various standard form construction contracts including the JBCC, NEC, FIDIC (various books) and GCC. Alon has been involved in numerous domestic and international arbitrations and has experience in utilising the ICC, UNCITRAL, LCIA, SIAC, ASA and ASFA Rules.

Alon acts primarily for large domestic (South African) and international contractors in Sub-Sahara Africa, including jurisdictions such as South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Mauritius, Malawi, Namibia, DRC and Nigeria. Outside of Africa Alon has acted for clients in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Alon’s construction experience covers all aspects of construction insurance including providing coverage advice on CAR policies and PI policies, to both contractors and insurers.  Alon also specialises in construction guarantees and has acted for both insurers and contractors in providing advice on all aspects of construction guarantees.

Alon’s practice also focuses on all areas of alternative dispute resolution including mediation and adjudication. Alon has considerable general commercial litigation experience and has represented numerous large corporate clients, both South African and international, in a wide range of matters, and across several sectors, including construction and engineering, mining, insurance, tender reviews, shareholder disputes, financial market disputes and defamation cases.

In 2017 Alon was named by Legal 500 as a prominent figure in construction disputes.

Alon is a member of the Society of Construction Law for Africa.

Alon is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Alon has recently been awarded a Diploma in International Arbitration by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Alon is on the drafting committee of the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa (International) which drafted and updates the International Arbitration Rules of the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa (International).

Experience

Alon's experience includes:

  • Representing a major international contractor in respect of a large infrastructure project in Botswana. Advice includes advice on all aspects of the project, including:
    • project management;
    • claims management and submissions;
    • contractual interpretation relating to entitlement to claim extensions of time and associated costs;
    • advice on all aspects of Botswana Law; advice on disputes with sub-contractors and the employer;
    • advice on referral to arbitration; advice on all aspects of construction guarantees,
    • including advance payment guarantee and performance guarantee.
  • Represented a large Australian mining house in relation to a multi-million US Dollar dispute on a diamond mine project in Botswana, including a mediation in Botswana.
  • Advice to client in relation to contractual negotiations and dispute resolution with large international hotel group in relation to development of hotel in Botswana.
  • Acted on behalf of a large Botswana Insurance Fund, in respect of a pension fund dispute in Botswana.
  • Representing a major international contractor on all aspects of a large infrastructure project in Zambia, including advice on:
    • claims management and submissions;
    • contractual interpretation relating to entitlement to claim extensions of time and associated costs;
    • advice on all aspects of Zambian Law,
    • including disputes with suppliers and employer;
    • advice on referral to arbitration; advice on all aspects of construction guarantees,
    • including advance payment guarantee and performance guarantee.
  • Representing a large pan African contractor in several disputes relating to renewable energy projects and infrastructure projects in various African jurisdictions including, South Africa, Mozambique, Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia.
  • Represented Australian mining company, in arbitration proceedings in relation to a multi-million US Dollar claims involving delays, extensions of time and applicable rates.
  • Represented Australian mining company in a mediation with the EPC engineer in relation to mining project in Malawi.
  • Represented professional engineer in fee dispute relative to professional services rendered in South Africa, Angola and Nigeria, such appointments being FIDIC based.
  • Acted for international professional engineers relating to a claim by a sub-contractor in respect of various projects in Tanzania.
  • Acting for several insurers on disputes relative to demands made on construction guarantees.
