Matthew Van Maasdyk is an Associate Designate in the Energy, Marine and Natural Resources (EMNR) team, reporting to Arthur James. He completed his articles at Clyde & Co and has spent the past two and a half years in the EMNR team, where he has developed considerable experience advising the French Minister of Defence and acting in complex cross-border disputes. His experience also encompasses a wide-variety of admiralty matters, including inter-alia, marine insurance claims, subrogated recoveries, judicial sales, and ship arrests.
Matthew holds a BA Law degree (Cum Laude) and an LLB from the University of Pretoria, obtained in 2018 and 2020 respectively. He also holds a Master’s degree in Maritime Law, which he completed with distinction (Cum Laude) in 2023. His dissertation, titled “Enhancing Maritime Cyber Resilience: A Call for Comprehensive Training and Regulation”, is due to be published in the South African Journal of Maritime Education and Training (SAJMET).
During the first year of his Master’s studies, Matthew was employed at Alpha Shipping Agency, where he was able to apply his legal knowledge in a practical setting and further cultivate his interest in the maritime field.
