James is an Associate in the Projects & Construction Group with experience advising a variety of clients on contentious and non-contentious construction matters, both domestic and international.

Full Profile

James’ contentious experience is sees him advise both contractors and employers across a variety of dispute resolution forms. This experience includes alternative dispute resolution, Adjudication, High Court Litigation and International Arbitration. James has recently acted for an international contractor in High Court (Technology and Construction Court) litigation and has acted for leading UK Contractors in a number of adjudications.

His non-contentious experience is varied. He often advises a Tier 1 Contractor on its contracts and associated risks for various major projects (including NEC and JCT forms). He also acts for developers and contractors, drafting and negotiating various contractual documents, but also has experience advising funds and other finance institutions on the construction aspects of relevant transactions.

  • Advising multiple UK developers on building contracts and professional team appointments for commercial and industrial developments. 
  • Advising a leading UK Contractor in an adjudication relating to fire safety.
  • Advising domestic contractors on the pre-action stages of a number of cladding and fire safety disputes. 
  • Acting for a Large UK Developer on multiple disputes relating to fire safety. 
  • Acting for a specialist Engineering Contractor in a multi-million-pound adjudication relating to a complex cut and carve project. 
  • Acting for an international contractor in Technology and Construction Court proceedings under an amended ICHEME Red Book in respect of the construction of an energy from waste plant. 
  • Acting for an African Public Authority in relation to an ICC Arbitration.
  • Advising an expert witness to a public inquiry further to a request for evidence under Rule 9 of the Inquiry Rules 2006.
  • Acting for an EPC Contractor on the drafting of a Supply Contract for a UK Energy from Waste Plant.
  • Advising a UK Contractor on the drafting of a bespoke suite of supply chain sub-contracts based on the IchemE Brown and Burgundy Books.
  • Advising multiple large financial institutions on the construction elements of various funding and development agreements including share purchase agreements, forward funding agreements and debt finance agreements.
  • Amendment to and negotiation of multiple JCT DB 2016 Building Contracts for several employer clients.
