Insights

Jonathan advises clients in the commodities, shipping and superyacht sectors, with a particular focus on managing risk and resolving disputes. He has extensive experience acting on matters arising out of sale contracts, shipbuilding contracts, charterparties and bills of lading, as well as on a wide range of international commercial and logistics agreements. Jonathan is a Legal Director in the firm’s Marine, Trading and Commodities department.

He advises clients across the commodities, shipping and superyacht sectors with a particular focus on risk management and dispute resolution. He has considerable experience conducting and resolving disputes before the English High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, as well as in arbitrations under the LMAA, LCIA, GAFTA, FOSFA, SAL, RSA and FCC rules.

Jonathan acts for shipowners, charterers and leading international commodities houses on a wide range of bill of lading, charterparty and sale contract disputes, and regularly advises clients on live issues arising during the transit of goods. He also has extensive experience representing owners and builders in major construction and repair disputes involving superyachts and large commercial vessels.

In addition, Jonathan advises banks, technology companies, logistics groups and freight forwarders on a broad range of international commercial agreements, particularly in the logistics and freight forwarding sectors, as well as on regulatory issues relating to the transport of goods by sea and by land. He also assists clients with general commercial litigation.

  • Evergreen Marine (UK) Limited v Nautical Challenge Ltd [2018] EWCA Civ 2173, [2021] UKSC 6, [2022] EWHC 206 (Admlty): Representing the successful owners of the MT “Alexandra I” in relation to this widely reported appeal on the application of the collision regulations and the apportionment of liability for a collision off Jebel Ali;
  • MUR Shipping BV v RTI Ltd [2022] EWHC 467 (Comm), [2022] EWCA Civ 1406: Representing the charterers in this significant appeal concerning the correct interpretation of “reasonable endeavours” provisions in force majeure clauses;
  • Advising various commodities traders and some of the world’s largest commodities houses in relation to a wide variety of sale contract, charterparty and shipping disputes;
  • Advising both owners and builders on numerous high value disputes concerning the construction and repair of superyachts and commercial vessels;
  • Advising an extensive range of ship owners and charterers in relation to numerous issues arising during the transport of goods, and a variety of charterparty disputes;
  • Advising one of the largest international banks in relation to regulatory requirements concerning the import of various metals, including investment grade gold and silver;
  • Advising one of the world's largest technology companies in relation to the regulatory requirements for the international carriage of goods both by sea and by road;
