Hickley is a Partner practising out of the Johannesburg office since February 2020. Since his admission as an attorney in 2014, his practice has been focused primarily on dispute resolution, matters related to insurance and reinsurance (including overage advice), and regulatory issues in the private healthcare sector. 

His experience in civil litigation includes matters in the lower courts, the High Court, and in the Supreme Court of Appeal. He has successfully represented clients before regulatory boards and has experience in criminal matters flowing from professional services. Beyond litigation in the court system, Hickley has experience in alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, including mediation and arbitration.

Hickley also has experience in the corporate and commercial field, including contractual drafting and negotiation, advice on corporate governance and general legal issues, as well dispute resolution. In these respects, he has worked with clients within the healthcare sector (including private hospitals and clinics), in the logistics industry and public sector.

Hickley regularly presents to groups on data protection laws, ethical issues and regulatory matters related to the healthcare sector.

Experience
  • Advising an insurer on policy response in relation to a large flood damage claim in Uganda.
  • Advising one of the largest associations of medical specialists in South Africa on the implementation of data protection compliance measures.
  • Successfully defending a claim based on an alleged lack of informed consent against a general surgeon through the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal.
  • Advising a healthcare start-up on the drafting and negotiation of agreements with third parties in order to limit their risk.
  • The negotiation and drafting of service level agreements on behalf of a public sector entity with a sensitive political and historical context.
