Nick has particular expertise in disputes involving the aviation, transport and defence sectors.

He has worked in-house as head of litigation for a major international airline, and now advises clients on the full range of commercial disputes within the aviation sector.  

Nick also assists airlines and other clients with regulatory and consumer claims, including for flight delay under “UK/EC 261”, in Court, alternative dispute resolution and adjudication, and pre-action.  This has included complex and sensitive claims involving litigants in person, and issues of conduct and costs arising from the activities of bulk claims providers. Nick assisted major airlines in developing their response to mass disruption events, including the covid-19 pandemic.

In the defence sector, Nick has advised a range of specialist contractors on procurement, technical and commercial issues and disputes. Nick previously served in the British Army and as a senior adviser within the UK Ministry of Defence and Cabinet Office and the European Union, and as a UK government lawyer.

Nick also has experience of representing clients in complex commercial disputes in litigation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution across a range of other sectors, including construction, infrastructure, energy and financial services.  

All Nick’s practice is highly international in nature, including transactions, litigation, arbitration and enforcement across many and varied jurisdictions, but with a particular focus on the Middle East and former Soviet Union.

Nick is called to the Bar of England and Wales. He did pupillage at Keating Chambers, before working in law firms including the former Allen & Overy LLP and Norton Rose Fulbright LLP.

Outside work, Nick enjoys reading widely, watching and playing sport and practising foreign languages.

Recent aviation-sector experience includes acting:

  • For an international airline in a successful LCIA arbitration against a fuel supplier
  • For a major group of airlines obtaining English summary judgment against wet lease providers, and associated enforcement issues in multiple jurisdictions
  • For a major budget airline in an English High Court claim arising from aircraft repainting, resolved by mediation
  • For an engine owner in a successful Singapore arbitration against an engineering contractor, and associated enforcement
  • For a state trade finance provider in various disputes arising from the leasing of executive jets
  • In a dispute relating to the supply of ground handling equipment
  • In a dispute between major airlines relating to damage to an aircraft
  • For an executive jet operator in a claim against an engineering contractor, arising from damage to an aircraft
  • For lessors in queries relating the terms of aircraft leases.
