Full Profile
Zil has almost a decade of experience advising on technology and telecoms matters in the Middle East, working with clients operating in a spectrum of sectors including the aviation-aerospace, healthcare, infrastructure and technology sectors. His experience includes advising clients in relation to regional projects involving cloud computing, data centers, Internet of Things (IoT), connected vehicles, technology contracting, data protection and cybersecurity, blockchain, e-commerce, digital media platforms and artificial intelligence. His experience also covers broader telecom licensing and regulatory matters, including satellite communications, submarine cable landings and interconnection.
Zil is a licensed lawyer in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and admitted to practice in Pakistan. He holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2017. Zil is a certified European data protection expert.
Prior to joining Clyde & Co, Zil worked at top-tier law firms in both the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).
Zil is fluent in English and Urdu.
Experience
- Advising an international SaaS service provider on data protection laws in respect of launching its offerings in the UAE (onshore and DIFC), KSA and Qatar.
- Advising a global wealth management services firm on the transparency requirements in relation to processing personal data using autonomous systems in the DIFC.
Experience gained prior to joining Clyde & Co
- Advising a regional data protection authority in respect of conducting adequacy assessments for several jurisdictions in the Middle East.
- Advising a global cloud service provider on data, cyber and cloud regulations in respect of its collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund on setting up an AI hub in KSA.
- Advising the DIFC Courts on regulatory challenges in offering blockchain enabled services including a virtual assets wills service and a digital notarization service.
- Advising various global communications service providers on telecoms licensing regulations for offering satellite communications and internet in the UAE and KSA.
- Advising a global telecoms service provider in respect of UAE and Saudi telecoms regulations on selling capacity and M&A notification obligations in the context of its acquisition of the worldwide assets of a UK based telecoms service provider.
