Sindy is a Senior Associate in the Hong Kong office. She joined the marine team of our Hong Kong office in December 2021. Her practice focuses on commercial and shipping disputes. She represents clients in international arbitration as well as court litigation in Hong Kong. She also advises on regulatory issues and assists clients in relation to investigations by authorities and departmental summonses.

Sindy holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Warwick and Postgraduate Certificate in Laws from the University of Hong Kong.  She is qualified as a Solicitor in Hong Kong in 2020 and in England and Wales in 2022. 

Sindy is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Experience

Commercial disputes

  • Acting for a US distributor of PCB in a multi-jurisdictional, multi-party litigation arising out of agency contracts;
  • Representing a family group of companies in actions against former directors for breaches of fiduciary duties and misappropriation of funds;
  • Acting for major logistics and supply chain companies in disputes under supply agreements, warehousing agreements etc.;
  • Representing an international freight forwarder in arbitration for claims under aircraft charter contracts;
  • Defending a corporate jet company in respect of alleged breach of aircraft management agreement;
  • Making Norwich Pharmacal applications against bank and liquidators for disclosure of documents for tracing assets subject to fraud;
  • Obtained an arbitral award of over RMB9 million plus compound interest which represented a full recovery of debt for a travel services provider.

Shipping disputes

  • Representing shipowners, charterers and cargo interests in various charterparty and contract of carriage disputes;
  • Acting for global container leasing groups in claims for detinue and conversion of containers leased to a shipping company which went into liquidation;
  • Assisting a charterer in dealing with cyberfraud incident and shipowner’s claim for non-payment of hire;  
  • Sought interim relief in Hong Kong for a UK energy company in aid of London arbitration of a charterparty dispute in connection with Russian sanctions;
  • Assisted a bunker seller in reaching a settlement with supplier and buyer in respect of alleged claims for off-spec bunkers;
  • Obtained an arbitral award for a service provider in ad hoc arbitration against a shipowner pursuant to overseas assignment of seafarer agreements.

Regulatory & criminal matters

  • Advising conglomerates on regulatory and compliance matters arising from their day-to-day business operations and transactions (e.g. licensing, personal data & privacy, employment, competition law issues etc.);
  • Assisted a shipowner in dealing with stowaways and suspected drugs found onboard a Hong Kong-flagged vessel;
  • Accompanying clients to interviews by authorities and advising on departmental summonses.
