How to manage sickness absence

Top tips on managing sickness absence:

  • Review the employee's attendance record and the reason for their absence
  • Inform them of the concerns and the attendance levels required
  • Give them a full opportunity to state their case and to improve their attendance
  • Issue appropriate warnings of dismissal if their attendance does not improve
  • Obtain any necessary medical advice to inform decision-making
  • Consider any disability discrimination issues carefully, including whether any adjustments should be made in light of a disability
  • Consider alternatives to dismissal
  • Give the employee a right of appeal against dismissal, if appropriate
