Clyde & Co Middle East dominates UAE 'law firm of the year' awards

  • Press Releases 7 September 2010 7 September 2010

Clyde & Co LLP has been named overall 'Law Firm of the Year', as well as 'Most Responsive International Firm', in the UAE in a survey of over 15,000 individual in-house lawyers and senior company directors across the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions. The firm was also named 'UAE firm of the year' for seven specialist areas of expertise, more areas than any other firm.

The annual survey, which is now in its fourth year, is said to be the largest such survey of in-house counsel in Asia and the Middle East. The survey is conducted by Pacific Business Press, hosts of www.inhousecommunity.com and publishers of Asian Counsel magazine.

Survey participants are asked which firms they 'prefer to use' for various expertise areas. Among other things, respondents are asked for their comments on the quality and value of service received from external counsel in their jurisdiction, with votes aggregated to select the winning firms in each category. The results are indicative of which private practice teams have made a strong impression on their clients and the in-house community in general.

Based on the nominations of the in-house counsel surveyed, Clyde & Co has been named an Asian-Counsel Firm of the Year 2010 for the following practice area(s) for the United Arab Emirates:

  • Overall 'Firm of the Year' - United Arab Emirates
  • Most Responsive International Firm - United Arab Emirates
  • Banking & Finance – winner / UAE
  • Corporate / M&A - tied winner with Linklaters / UAE
  • Employment / Labour – winner / UAE
  • Intellectual Property / Patents – winner / UAE
  • Maritime & Shipping – winner / UAE
  • Real Estate / Construction – winner / UAE
  • Telecommunication / Media / Technology – winner / UAE

Middle East Board member, Abu Dhabi Corporate partner Niall O'Toole, said of the awards: "Clyde & Co has performed well over the past few years in a difficult market, and many of our internal development and client-focus programmes are having a tangible impact across the business, in line with the firm's strategic business plans. I'm very pleased to see this impact and effort reflected in external awards, particularly in relation to so many core areas of our Middle Eastern practice. My personal congratulations to all the groups involved on their achievement."

Recently, Clyde & Co was also voted Middle East Law Firm of the Year by legal market intelligence and transaction analysis provider 'PLC Which Lawyer?' in a process that canvassed over 5,500 legal departments worldwide. The indicative client quote accompanying the award read "Clydes are the only firm in the Gulf that has the stability and depth to compete on a regional basis. They managed to weather the economic storm of the past year in Dubai while still maintaining staff and quality of work."

Clyde & Co has four Middle Eastern offices, which operate as a single unit; Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the UAE, Doha in Qatar, and an associated office in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. The firm formalised its presence in the Middle East in 1989 after many years of client activity in the region. Today the firm is recognised by the market as one of the major international law firms in the Middle East.

Internationally, Clyde & Co is particularly well known for expertise in relation to international trade, emerging markets and in relation to high profile and/or difficult dispute resolution work.
