Global law firm Clyde & Co today announced the appointment of its Los Angeles-based partner, Craig S. Barnes, to a judgeship in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Barnes joins thirty-two others selected by California Governor Jerry Brown for the state trial court bench.
Barnes practiced law for over thirty years, concentrating on catastrophic loss litigation, historic abuse, brain injury and other major injury cases, complex business litigation, product liability and general tort litigation. With more than twenty-five trials in his career, he has won numerous defense verdicts on behalf of his clients, including a San Luis Obispo jury verdict on a major injury claim where the plaintiff sought $10 million at trial and a Compton jury trial brought by a plaintiff who sought damages of $1.7 million.
Barnes was a senior partner with Sedgwick LLP, where he built a successful practice and was a leader in promoting diversity and inclusion. He has worked with the Los Angeles County Bar's Subcommittee on Diversity in the Profession involving high school students, the Posse Foundation, SAGE (Summer Associate Girls Inc. Externship), and has been an active participant in the California Minority Counsel Program and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. Barnes joined Clyde & Co on 1 January 2018 as part of a group of 15 partners who joined from Sedgwick LLP and they have since integrated into the firm's practices in California, Chicago and New York.
Bill Casey, Partner and Chair of the North American Board at Clyde & Co, says:“Craig is a lawyer of the highest quality and standing, whether dealing with clients, colleagues or the court. He brings the energy, vision and strategic thinking necessary to prevail, regardless the complexity or demands of the case. These qualities will make him a perfect fit for his new role as judge and the city of Los Angeles is lucky to have him. We wish him well as he takes on this new challenge.”
Barnes starts his new role on November 5, 2018.
Clyde & Co first launched in the US in 2006 and now one of the largest international firms in the country with more than 60 partners and nearly 250 legal professionals across nine US offices, working alongside 3,600 people globally.
