The impact of GDPR on businesses in the Middle East

On 25 May 2018, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will replace all current data protection laws in every European Union country.

However, the GDPR has a wider reach than just the EU: it changes the scope and application of data protection laws globally and fundamentally puts the power back with the individual. This includes the Middle East, where the GDPR will potentially impact companies if they are offering products to individuals within the EU or monitoring the behaviours of EU-based individuals, or if they plan to do so in the future.

With the effect of the GDPR being more extensive than local regulations, there are likely to be a number of steps you would need to take in order to be compliant if the GDPR applies to your organisation. With potential fines up to 20 million Euros or 4% of annual global turnover – whichever is higher – it is vital your business is prepared.
