Sarah Murray-Smith is a partner in our London office and senior member of Clyde & Co’s national abuse team.

Sarah provides legal insight and training to clients and underwriters on developments in the abuse and safeguarding arena.  

To enable clients to maintain oversight of their abuse portfolio Sarah has developed and delivers detailed MI & KYO reports which enable critical analysis of the abuse claims experience. 

In her daily practice, Sarah specialises in complex abuse claims and is skilled in handling sensitive cases. Her work includes large group actions on behalf of insurers, schools, public bodies, local authorities, religious organisations and charities.  

Sarah has also developed a specialist practice in assisting private and insurer clients by creating and running bespoke redress schemes & claims handling frameworks to navigate large groups of claims; delivering complete claims & costs solution packages for her clients. 

Sarah is well known in the market and has established positive relationships within the claimant solicitor community as well as fellow defendant firms; through collaboration and innovation she achieves successful outcomes for her clients, while maintaining their reputation and minimising indemnity spend. 

Sarah also leads our Travel Abuse team, supporting travel and tour operators manage claims and the risks posed by abuse & assault claims occurring abroad.  

She advises travel client & tour operators on risk management and civil defence strategy in high profile & sensitive assault claims. She also delivers regular client training on these topics.
Sarah also has an established practice and specialises in claims that involve psychiatric injuries, namely stress/bullying &harassment. She acts for corporate defendants as well as the police and fire services in dealing with complex and high value employee based psychiatric injury claims. She has achieved numerous trial wins and discontinuances on matters related to stress, bullying and harassment claims.  

In one of Sarah’s more notable cases, she acted for the defendant in Raggett v Society of Jesus Trust for Roman Catholic Purposes (2012). In this case, a former city lawyer sought £5 million damages for non-recent sexual abuse but was awarded £55,000, with the result that he also had to meet our costs for the final three years of the action, up to and including trial.
