Alvin is an Associate in the Marine and International Trade team in the Singapore office, with experience in civil and commercial disputes.

Alvin’s area of practice spans from shipping and commodities trading, building and construction, and restructuring and insolvency proceedings. He has represented clients in disputes arising under commodity contracts, construction contracts, as well as shareholder agreements. Alvin has also acted as defence counsel in regulatory and criminal proceedings brought under the Income Tax Act and the Workplace Safety and Health Act. In addition, Alvin has represented construction companies in arbitration proceedings under the SIAC.

In 2020, Alvin was appointed as an assessor under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) Act 2020. He issued determinations on applications brought about by construction companies under the Act, for interim relief from performing contractual obligations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Expérience

• Building and Construction – Successfully resisted a striking out application on behalf of a building contractor involved in a dispute with homeowner.
• Commercial disputes – Acted for a Hong Kong incorporated entity against a Singapore company in a High Court claim, concerning breach of loan agreements and shareholder dispute.
• Building and Construction – Successfully obtained an arbitral award in favour of a building contractor in a SIAC arbitration against a homeowner relating to defective works.
• Restructuring and Insolvency – Acted for supporting creditor in a company winding up application against a local construction company.
• Regulatory and Criminal Matters – Acted for company director prosecuted by the Inland Revenue Authority for providing false information under the Income Tax Act to obtain cash pay-out for businesses.
• Building and Construction – Acted for a construction company in an urgent application for injunction against a call on performance bond by the developer.
