Global law firm Clyde & Co is pleased to announce the completion of its network of intellectual property offices across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries with the addition of an office in Kuwait. The office, which is part of Clyde IP Services, provides trade mark and patent filing capabilities. It adds to the existing network, which also spans the rest of the GCC countries: Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE.
The expansion comes at a time when the GCC has been unifying its intellectual property laws with a GCC Patent Law and a GCC Trade Mark Law. Clyde & Co, which is the largest international law firm in the Middle East, is the only international law firm able to offer a direct trade mark and patent filing service across all six GCC countries, in addition to serving the rest of the Middle East.
Rob Deans, Clyde & Co Partner and Head of Intellectual Property says: "The completion of our GCC network of offices highlights our commitment to expanding our intellectual property capabilities across the Middle East region. Importantly, this coincides with the introduction of the GCC Trade Mark Law, which increases the importance of being able to provide a consistent and seamless service across the region. Our continued aim is to provide our clients with a pre-eminent service for all intellectual property matters across the Middle East region. The efficiencies of our model also enable us to lower the cost to clients of protecting IP rights in the region."
In addition to regional trade mark and patent filing capability, Clyde & Co has a full service IP practice centred on the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. As trade flows through the Middle East continue to grow, client demand for intellectual property advice is increasing.
The GCC is a single economic bloc, which is becoming increasingly integrated for the protection of intellectual property rights. The GCC Patent Law and the GCC Common Customs Law have been in place since 1992 and 2003 respectively. More recently, the GCC Trade Mark Law is being implemented across the region with, to date, the new law having been adopted by Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia (with Oman, Qatar and the UAE expected to follow).
Clyde & Co’s intellectual property practice has a more than 25 year track record in the Middle East. Since 2010, the team in the UAE has been ranked as 'top tier' for every category of intellectual property by Chambers Global, Legal 500, Managing Intellectual Property - IP Stars, and WTR 1000 – a total of over 40 consecutive 'top tier' rankings. The firm received the inaugural UAE Firm of the Year Award from Managing IP in 2015, and received this award again in 2016. Clyde & Co also received the inaugural Middle East Intellectual Property Team of the Year Award from Oath Middle East in 2015. With the introduction of its GCC network, the Clyde & Co team is now ranked by Managing Intellectual Property’s IP Stars survey in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia (in addition to the UAE).
