The San Francisco office of global law firm Clyde & Co has partnered with local art colleges Academy of Art (AAU), California College of the Arts (CCA) and San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) to support emerging artists through the firm’s fifth annual Art Award. Through a competition framework, 19 student artists were selected from 68 entries from the universities to exhibit in Clyde & Co’s San Francisco office for one year.
The firm grants participating artists with a $500 honorarium, pro bono legal services, professional art sales advice, and potential sales opportunities in which all proceeds go directly to the artists. In addition, cash awards were given to two participating artists for their pieces at a reception at the Clyde & Co San Francisco office on October 11.
The first award of $5,000, the Clyde & Community Art Award, was determined by a panel of three distinguished art professionals and was given to Hilary Bond of SFAI for Water Landscape. The judges panel included: Lexygius Sanchez Calip, 2017 Clyde & Community Art Award Winner and MFA candidate at SFAI; Jennifer Kesseler, External Exhibitions Coordinator and Art Consultant at Slate Art in Oakland, CA; and Julie Armistead, independent curator and retired Collections Manager/Registrar at Saint Mary's College Museum of Art in Moraga, CA. The second award of $2,500, the Office Vote Award, was voted on by Clyde & Co San Francisco employees and was given to Danielle Melen of SFAI for Blue Room.
“We are thrilled to be a part of the dynamic San Francisco art scene through this year’s Art Award,” said Clyde & Co San Francisco Partner, Bill Casey. “It is an honor to have such talent displayed in our office and we are proud to be able to award the artists with means to pursue their passion.”
This year’s exhibition features a variety of media including painting and sculpture. In addition to the winners, other exhibiting artists are: Jeff R. McWilliams (AAU); Judy Hart (AAU); Mark Roberts (AAU); Mishaal Atheer (AAU); ; Charmaine Koh (CCA); Emily Budd (CCA); Najah Alboushi (CCA); Bojana Rankovic (SFAI); Danielle Melen (SFAI); Hilary Bond (SFAI); Jake Schempf (SFAI); Jiaming Song (SFAI); Jusun Seo (SFAI); Katherine Boxall (SFAI); Katie Curry (SFAI); Melissa Carter (SFAI); Mika Sperling (SFAI); Ni Pan (SFAI); and Yuanyuan (Eunice) Liu (SFAI).
Facilitated by Erica Schulz Art Consulting in conjunction with local gallery Hang Art, the Art Award embraces opportunity and entrepreneurialism by nurturing talented new artists as they transition from art school to the professional world. It is a firm-wide initiative inspired by Clyde & Co’s London headquarters’ flourishing program that recognizes and supports student artists.
